Robin, The ATU is noisy but it is normal. It is a very sophisticated circuit designed to match wide ranging loads. AS for the match indicator in the ATU panel-it's simply no reading properly.This is a software glitch, which Eric is looking into. Use the SWR meter indication not the ATU panel indicator. Full power output will occur with any match from 2:1 to 1:1.
With the internal ATU and flexible drive control, you can use just about any amp from old Heathkits, Henry, etc to modern solid state amps. I use a 40 year old homebrew 3-1000. I use the ATU to tune the 15m band switch settings to operate on 17 meters. 73 John P.
