An issue was discussed recently on the reflector about using mono headphones with the Flex-5000. If the following guidelines are followed, mono headphones should be able to be used with the Flex-5000 with no problems. Of course, you will only get 1/2 of the audio & will lose some functionality, but they will still work & not damage the hardware. If I am wrong in this, would someone from Flex-Radio Systems please shoot me down.
1. Mono headphones may be used if they are wired to the tip & sleeve or to the ring & sleeve of a stereo 1/4" phone plug, referred to in the Flex documentation as a TRS plug. 2. NEVER plug a mono 1/4" phone plug into the PHONES jack on the front panel of the Flex-5000. This will place a dead short across one output of the stereo headphone amplifier. 3. NEVER wire the tip & ring together on a stereo 1/4" phone plug & plug it into the PHONES jack. This will tie the 2 outputs of the stereo headphone amplifier together and will cause an overload if the 2 channels are not sending exactly the same signal to the phones. This occurs, for example, if you are using the dual-watch feature. The audio popping referred to in the note on page 4 of the manual is caused by the overload resulting from violating either rule 2 or rule 3 above. W4TME & AB1DO, this sounds like a good candidate for the Knowledge Base or a possible addition to the manual. 73, Ray, K9DUR _______________________________________________ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List [email protected] http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/
