I had a problem with the VOX on my 5000A causing the xmitter to cycle
on and off even with the microphone turned off. It was difficult to find
a sensitivity level which would stop the cycling but provide reliable
VOX action. I discovered that the problem was only when I was using the
ACOM 2000A. I have all my rigs (including the 5000A) connected through
a NCS Multi-Switcher. The problem was only on the 5000A. After further
research, I found that when the ACOM 2000A unkeyed, I very small short
pulse was induced into the mic line. I was using 7 conductor shield
cable, the Mic lines did NOT have an independent shield. The cable
carries Mic, PTT, speaker, linear keying, etc all in one cable back to
the NCS switcher. The obvious solution is to use good quality cable that
has an independent shield for the mic. The interesting fact is why
didn’t this create a problem with my other rigs? I concluded that the
answer is that the 5000A VOX trigger is much faster than the other rigs
(7800, O II, 9000D).

Now that I have built a new cable with proper shielding, the VOX action
on the 5000A is the best I have ever seen!!
