The radio I probably kept the longest (so far at least) was a yaesu FT-1000D, I bought one of the first ones and held on to it for almost 10 years. A few years after it came out they came out with a pin diode modification for TR switching. I sent mine in and had the pin diode modification done. It could about 150 bucks shipping plus their time and labor.
Did Yaesu cheat me by improving the radio? When I owned a 756 Pro2, did I feel cheated that I couldn't upgrade it at all when the Pro3 came out? No and No. I really don't think our friends in Austin did anything underhanded nor with ill intent. If you factor in the cost minus the rebate for returning the old board, its less than I paid for shipping for the 1000d.
