I am using a Shure SM58 dynamic mic with balanced (XLR) output. I
custom-made my own cables, one to go to the mic input, and one
terminated in a 1/4" TRS connector to mate with the balanced input on
the "back". (I have my 5K turned around so that the "back" is
forward.) Both inputs work with the mic but I have to turn the gain up
higher when using the balanced input on the back since it has 20dB
less gain.

I don't use any EQ. The Shure SM58 has a broad peak in response in the
upper mid-range that adds "punch" and clarity to vocals. I find it
works well for transmitting too. This is an excellent mic for people
trying to do "HiFi" audio on-the-air.
