The downside is Adobe Acrobat is a cost item selling for at least $260 or more.
So perhaps open office might have a solution or using side bars on those items
that changed.

Indeed.. In fact, you need Acrobat Pro to do that ($159 if you qualify for the
educational/student pricing, direct from Adobe):
Qualified Examples

    * Qualified individuals who acquire Educational Software Products for their
own personal use but not for further distribution or transfer and who have
presented to Reseller Appropriate Identification of current status as:
    * Students enrolled in grades K-12 at an accredited public or private
primary or secondary school providing full-time instruction
    * Full or part time students enrolled at higher education institutions
defined as accredited public or private university or college (including
community, junior or vocational college) that grants degrees requiring not less
than the equivalent of two (2) years of full-time study
    * Full or part time faculty and staff employed by accredited K-12 and
higher education institutions.
    * Other qualified examples as listed by Adobe from time to time on its
Internet website or in other written communication.

So, if you're taking that introductory basket weaving class at the local
community college, you qualify, or you have a child in K-12...

But I agree, better if the originator of the document could do change bars..
Word has done it for decades, I suspect Open Office does too (at least a quick
google shows hits from 2006 that talk about it...)
