Dan, Due to differences in the hardware, one answer cannot apply to both the SDR-1000 and the FLEX-5000/FLEX-3000.
I have a Heil ProSet Plus headset (both HC-4 & HC-5 elements) that I used with my SDR-1000 and am now using with my FLEX-5000A. I had the M-Audio Delta 44 sound card with the SDR1k. The Heil definitely needed an external mic pre-amp to work properly with the Delta 44. However, there is no issue with using the Heil with the FLEX-5000.
