Mark I had many problems with my Flex 3000 locking up until I happened to remember that I was running a Symantic Firewall product, installed as part of Symantic Corporate version 10.
You might check to see if you have any sort of firewall program running on your computer and if so disable it. My symptom was a low latency reading, ~ 350 or so when in normal operations with spike over 3000 when I would do something else on the computer like surf to a web page, with Google mail being the worse offender. I shut down the fire wall and now my latency sits around 100 micro seconds. While anti virus stuff is a unfortunate necessity today, those sorts of programs can cause all sorts of problems in real time operations.
