Well its going again and under 18.3 I tried so many things its more than a little difficult to be sure what fixed it. My suspicions go with something I tried after all else failed. For installing one of the third party bits of Software the author made a comment to the effect that if one wants to ask for trouble under Vista allow the program to be stored in Program files folder. Since my problem was that windows was having trouble in finding the drives to load when I connected the flex to the computer, I tried this and set the target folder to be in the C: root in a folder. It worked ! I'm not sure if this is a general work around when installing drivers under Vista but it seems to work for me.
