My Sony laptop works great, even using the built in fire wire port.
I looked, and only the (empty) pcmcia slot is on the same irq.

Its not real fast, being a cheap laptop, but it had no glitches.

I did web research when thinking about a faster used laptop, and there were a lot of reports of the audio guys who could not get a Toshiba to work with the firewire.....

Subject: Re: [Flexradio] re Update to laptop/firewire problem

Certain manufacturers like to tied their I/O cards to the same bus as
the SATA disk subsystem. I remember HP used to tie their removable CD
drives on the same bus system as the disk drive, so when you removed
the CD drive, it would wipe out the hard drive (bad design). I have
seen the Toshiba work, it all depends on how the internal motherboard
was designed. I personally have had good luck with the Lenovo (the
ThinkPad versions) laptops, and others have used the IMacs with good
success with bootcamp and XP.

I wish that Flex could test out every laptop/desktop, but that is
totally out of where they need to spend the money, I think everyone
will much rather have the time spent on radio/software updates rather
than testing on PC hardware.

Thanks to all who made suggestion...

I have now tried both XP and Vista without result.
Looking at some Computer Forums it seems that Toshiba are unable to build a Laptop that will work properly with PCMCIA Firewire cards.
Will sadly have to abandon the project
