Thanks Dudly and Brian. I nornally run the mic at 35-37 which gives me audio
peaks of around -2dB max. The max gain situation I described was to show that
there was actually a power output from that noise.
And the reason the downward expander made no difference is because, uh, duh!, I
hadn't set it up after downloading 2.0.16. What can I say?
Anyway, Tim straightened me out and the Flex and I are happy.

Sounds like you have the mic gain too high.. With just about any mic, you
should not need to go above 40 or 50, particularly with the Flex 1500 or 3000
where you have even more mic gain..

I removed the mic, inserted a spare plug with pin 7 & 8 shorted - no

As I said, others, listening specifically for it, have not heard this
noise, but by recording a 'blank' transmission and turning up the volume during
replay it is definitely audible as a 'white' noise.
The downward expander has no effect on the noise.
This noise was not there until I upgraded to 2.0.16. It's going to be
raining all day so might as well delete all the files and reload 2.0.16, unless
you have a better idea.
