Thanks Dudly and Brian. I nornally run the mic at 35-37 which gives me audio peaks of around -2dB max. The max gain situation I described was to show that there was actually a power output from that noise.
And the reason the downward expander made no difference is because, uh, duh!, I hadn't set it up after downloading 2.0.16. What can I say? Anyway, Tim straightened me out and the Flex and I are happy. With just about any mic, you should not need to go above 40 or 50, particularly with the Flex 1500 or 3000 where you have even more mic gain.. 73, Dudley WA5QPZ FlexRadio Systems (512) 250-8595, Option 2 Email: dud...@flexradio.com Web: www.flexradio.com "Tune in excitement!" ™ On Tue, Nov 30, 2010 at 6:32 AM, pierce day <pierce...@comcast.net> wrote: Tim: The attached file showing the audio noise is a bit smaller. With the mic at 0 the ALC reads -30dB With the mic at 70the ALC reads -2dB With the drive at 100 the wattmeter reads 0 with the mic at normal (37) With the drive at 100 the wattmeter reads 40-70 with the mic at 70 I did another DB reset - no change. I removed the mic, inserted a spare plug with pin 7 & 8 shorted - no change. I then shorted pin 7, 8, and 5 - no change. As I said, others, listening specifically for it, have not heard this noise, but by recording a 'blank' transmission and turning up the volume during replay it is definitely audible as a 'white' noise. The downward expander has no effect on the noise. This noise was not there until I upgraded to 2.0.16. It's going to be raining all day so might as well delete all the files and reload 2.0.16, unless you have a better idea.
