In all this discussion about matching, just remember that there are two issues with antennas.
 1. You have to get the power into the antenna by matching
2. The antenna has to radiate the power in a direction that will reach the intended receiver.

You can learn a lot about your antenna by modeling it. If it is a vertical longer than 1/4 wave, or twice that for a dipole, it will have lobes and nulls. It may be sending most of your power in directions where nobody will receive it. I recommend EZNEC as a cheap, easy and fun way to discover where your power is really going. If you can set up a Flex, you can certainly use EZNEC.
