I thought that Downward Expander (DE) is used to reduce background noise when 
you 'aren't' talking. 
When you are talking, the Compander (CPDR) compresses (attentuates) the voice 
peaks and expands (amplifies) the voice valleys.  
DX has been explained as lind of a super-duty (more aggressive) Compander.
