Hi Tim & all, There actually is a standard for data called VITA-49 but we do not have to use it of course.
FWIW I'll be adding my own I/Q over IP protocol (packet format) for the SDR-RADIO console starting tomorrow, this console & digital software will support both receivers and transceivers. As for a standard modem interface - this will happen but you can expect some of the more exotic / commercial modes (i.e. non-Ham) to require a licence, and these don't come cheap (see http://www.wavecom.ch/default.htm and hold on to your seat when you look at the prices). Herding cats / grumpy spaniels can be a lot easier than getting Hams to agree on standards.
