If you have a balanced mic with a 3-pin XLR and there is no PTT switch, there is no technical reason to use the 8-pin Foster connector unless the mic has extremely low output and needs a mic preamp (in this case, I would recommend a separate mic preamp). Use the 1/4" TRS balanced line in connector on the back of the FLEX-5000 *OR* wire it to the FlexWire connector so it can be used on any of the three FLEX-x00 SDRs.
