The KPA500 measures its RF input and switches within milliseconds to to
the correct band, so if the Flex model you wish to use with it doesn't
output band data you'll only lose part of the first dit (if sending CW)
or the first syllable (if SSB) or the first... and only when you change
bands.
Of course, the radio DOES need to output a Tx enable signal (pull to
ground) to switch from Tx to Rx :-)
