You know, Ross, when I first received my 3000 back in the days when the earth was young, I took one look at that mike connector, remembered when a mike connector had a single eyelit in the center and a nice spring strain relief, shook my head, scratched several times and went to Radio Shack. I bought some of those RJ connectors and their best quality crimper, thirty feet of eight conductor cable, a metal box and an eight terminal strip and then went home to find the coil of braid that I normally use for grounding stuff. I squeezed the braid open so I could push a suitable length of the cable through, saving the rest for future similar applications, and then attached one of those goofy RJ connectors to one end. I now had a well shielded cable that I could ground as wisdom demands. Then I drilled a few holes in that metal box so that all of my existing mike connectors could be attached as desired. I do go from D-104 to Pilots head set and even one of those shiny gold things from Heil. I took a piece of paper and very carefully identified each pin and then fastened the now nicely shielded cable from the 3000 to the respectively numbered terminals on the strip which I had mounted in the metal box. Then I found all the manuals for my mikes and wired the appropriate connectors to the desired screws on that terminal strip. Yes, I did leave out the fact that the D-104 and pilots head set do require some trivial additional work. And just in case you've forgotten where some of that information might be found I suggest you look on page 65 of the April 2010 QST.

Suddenly I realized that perhaps I had made a "universal adapter" and never again would I have to beg some piece of metal to be nice to me.

This will not solve the most difficult microphone problem that I have encountered so far: how does one keep the cat from chewing off the foam thing on the mike?

I believe so. I'm only sure of the Yaesu mic on the more recent models. Look at page 4 of the 5000 manual for detailed pin-out information. Just looked...it is compatible.

I have an yaesu mh-1 b8 microphone from my 757gx2. Is this microphone also plug and play for the 5000a?
