Very good, Ian, thanks much. For those who may be interested in
pursuing this, there is a complete set of routines for serial port
access via VBA at:

 http://dev.emcelettronica.com/serial-port-communication-excel-vba

You could develop a nice interface like Ian's spreadsheet or
(presumably) go completely wild and build a bridge, a control
interface like HRD, or whatever. These routines do it all with VBA
calling the OS API and do not require loading a separate .COM object
or .dll.
