Flexers: I admit that 2 weeks ago I didn't know what a Delayed Procedural Call (DPC) was or understand the importance of latency issues on a computer supporting a Flex radio.
When my Flex 5000's SSB modulation became a problem on 12 and 15m I was concerned, but thought it was a radio settings issue (and began fiddling with sampling rates and buffer sizes). When the modulation died on 17m as well, I began to read the reflector info on signal distortion, and found a very valuable post by Tim (Aug '12) regarding Latency Mon software and determining DPC and latency status. To my horror, after the download I found that my HP i7 system was severely limiting my output due to "hard pagefaults". I upgraded the system BIOS, upgraded the drivers, ran registry optimizers, and defragmented the system, but still had issues. My system's (Microsoft) Event Viewer showed a problem with multiple errors from .dll files, and a new PC tune-up program (FixCleaner) helped to sort out and correct the .dll file problems. I short, I'm making SSB calls on all bands again, but when running Latency Mon adjacent to pSDR, I'm still getting out only 60-80 watts out at times due to my system's limitations. Although I don't need tremendous power to trigger my amp, distortion is passed up through the chain as well if audio dropouts are occurring. I plan to buy a system with low latency and fast processing from Neal Campbell to avoid the headaches, but would advise Flexers to check their latency, optimize their computing power with an appropriate PC tune-up tool, and not scrimp on the computer used to support Flex operations.
