Hi there Terry. Thank you very much for jumping in on this topic. So far I am
with you in every way. I have been given several different opinions on values
to use and will try them out soon. ref the external DSP unit, I was kind of
hoping that the Flex would be able to perform any kind of DSP needed to
accomplish the required NR. But, in all fairness, even my ole FT-1000 MP NR
really stinks. I have yet to find one time where I thought it made the signal
easier to copy, IMO. TU agn es 73.

Oh, CU on 2m SSB hi-hi

  Hi Gedas

I have tried just about every combination of the NR parameters and have only
succeeded in creating a more distorted and basically unlistenable sound.
Reducing AGC-T is much more effective in reducing noise, but you also lose some
sensitivity. With all the other sophisticated capabilities of the PowerSDR
software, the NR is surely one of the more disappointing features. With the
signal in the digital domain the software should be capable of much better
noise reduction than is presently available.

I have had much better luck with post rig processing, using a BHI Neim1031
Mark II processor. These units are made in the UK.

This unit connects to the audio output of the Flex and is very successful in
reducing background noise. It has 8 stepwise levels of noise reduction and a
built in amplifier that is very effective. This same unit is available in the
US through GAP Antennas and known as "Hear It"
http://www.gapantenna.com/hearit_inline.htm This is the same unit as the BHI
but with the controls oriented horizontally rather than vertically. It is a
very effective unit especially for weak signal work.

I was playing around with the NR function on my 5000A (V2.5.3) for the first
time trying different settings of Taps, Gain, Delay, & Leak. I was not having
much luck blindly running numbers up and down. I was wondering if anyone had a
source of information that they could point to that talked about what those
various parameters were and how they might affect the overall NR function etc?
Or possibly if someone has found a set of numbers that worked well for them in
certain noisy instances that would be interesting to discuss....TU es 73
