That's a likelyhood, I'd say. You can bet that two code development paths
are taking up lots of time and $$$ FRS at. I speculate that you'll see
product consolidation that will drive SmartSDR as a platform going forward
for a "thin pipe" sdr architecture for all FRS products.

It is clear that FireWire is long-in-tooth and is being abandoned by
hardware manufacturers. PowerSDR is a mature product and does great things
on the Windows side, but I can imagine that a lot of support and software
development is required to keep everything stable in a constantly changing
Windows environment. PowerSDR development can't go on forever - but I'd
like to see an organized demise with the code released so that the people
who want to use it on future platforms with a firewire hack

The promise at product announcement at Dayton 2012 was multi-platform
support - Mac's and tablets. The client support methodology is likely
getting baked in with standards that will port to other radios as well. It
is the nature of processors to get faster and cheaper - as FPUs go in that
direction and the demand for the lower end products decay, expect more
SoftSDR based products... with a license fee that supports the newer
products and provides updates that will extend the life of the F6K products
until no one is using Brand I or Y... and FRS gets a Benjamin Franklin from
each active customer ev.

I'm surprised that FRS made an announcement so far in advance as Dayton
last year. Best laid plans... but it has to have hurt sales of the current
products as people wait for the new stuff before buying. I'm happy that FRS
seems well capitalized and I'm sure that I'll enjoy my new Flex 6500 one
day in the fairly near future, and that future Flex 4500 products are in
the lab.
