David,
Just remember that voice is not the same as CW, even on analog radios your 
speech pattern will only show 30 to 50% of the CW output power due to the vast 
difference in average to Peak power of CW.  If you are driving the rig hard 
enough to get the same output as CW you will be badly distorted and splattering 
the band.  A two tone test signal is the best way to quantify the output in SSB.
