After going back and reading again, I think that I figured out what my problem was... All the information was there, I was just not getting the following little bit: in the text, it keeps talking about the "namespace definition topic" and in one place it says that this is "(usually _ContentBaseDefinition)". (It turns out that _ContentBaseDefinition is in fact hard coded and is the only namespace definition topic that there is.) I'd not ever configured anything using this topic, so "namespace definition topic" was kind of meaningless to me.
I just didn't put it all together correctly and I can't really see how to make it any more clear, with the possible exception of making it very clear that "namespace definition topic" == "_ContentBaseDefintition".
