Landing gear struts compress, so there isn't a single point of
intersection.  Worse, they don't always point down.  Even worse, the
ground isn't always flat, so a plumb bob won't always tell you the
right point even for a vertical landing gear strut.

Elevation is the wrong metaphor for this problem.  As is being
discussed on the plib list, what is really needed is a generic vector
intersection test.  That would clobber both the mouse click picking
problem and the gear strut test in a single blow.
