Yes.  Although the loader could play tricks like storing the
alpha channel in a separate grayscale image.  And I believe the
already-mentioned jpeg2000 format does support 4-channel images.
Many of the alpha images are actually poor choices for jpeg
anyway, as the cutouts often have fine detail / high frequency
shapes.

But the point wasn't that jpeg was perfect for everything, just
that refusing to use it where appropriate was silly.  Especially
for the terrain textures, it works really, really well.
