Right now, people toggle the pilot automatically so that it appears
only for external views.  I don't use external views much (I prefer to
fly the planes rather than watching from the outside as the autopilot
flies them), but when I do use external views, I find it very
disconcerting if nobody's flying the plane, especially the small ones
like the Cub.

It's not bizarre.  I don't think it would hurt for people to agree on
a toggle property, though I don't think we could justify GUI support.
