I am planning to replace the main flightgear.org ftp and rsync server
with another machine. This isn't new hardware, but it's a fresh OS load
since the old machine was setup many years ago. I've tried to keep up
with patches and security fixes, but it's getting pretty old and creaky
and needs to be wiped clean. For servers, it's easier to prepare a
different machine and swap it in rather than taking down the original
for however long it takes to do the reload. However, it's also very
easy to forget about something in advance.
So I am warning you all about this. Hopefully it will be a smooth drop
in replacement, but if anyone has trouble with ftp, rsync, or terrasync
services, please let me know.
For what it's worth, the current machine's uptime record is 339 days,
ending May 25, 2005. Currently we are on a 204 day uptime streak. Most
of the reboots in the history of this machine have been due to power
outages or software upgrades.
