Currently FS9 (2004) uses a ground texture resolution of 4.8m/pixel. I believe from what the MS developers have said on their blogs and the AVSIM forums that the next version (FSX) will be using 1.2m/pixel which is pretty close to what we have in FlightGear at the moment.
