Could this make a difference? Doesn't the autopilot just operate the normal
controls -- in Real Life and in fgfs? Maybe I'll try in the evening ...

I didn't start on ground, but with this command line (relevant parts only):

 $ fgfs --aircraft=737-300 --airport=KSNS --altitude=30000 --heading=320
        --vc=440 --prop:/controls/gear/gear-down=false --timeofday=noon
        --disable-real-weather-fetch
