I can confirm Georg's findings. I also get lots of messages from the
ground-cache code, like the following:

> prepare_ground_cache(): trying to build cache without any scenery below the 
> aircraft

There definitely is scenery below the aircraft, as I can see it and I
tried to land on it after adding some altitude, but the aircraft just
goes through the ground. I tried this with the standard scenery around
EDNY (n47e009).

However, when I try that in the San Francisco, I can land on hills and
similar.

I don't know if it is important, but I use the FG_SCENERY variable to
specify the list of scenery directories.
