Fortunately _my_ instructor was seriously concerned with always
installing a "safe" speed for climb, approach or whatever instead of
stupid memorization of pitch angles and the like.
Actually I don't think this took more time overall in preparation for
the first solo. Instead, this approach is well-suited to kill multiple
birds with just one stone, by, in consequence, saving training time on
other situations (where the identical rule applies) without the
slightest negligence of safety concerns.

Since I've started training at flight school I've flown, mmmh, five to
seven different SEP aircraft as PIC (depends on what you count as
"different") and I was pleased to see that these basic rules match
perfectly on any of them  :-)
