It should be safe enough, as it's just applying some techniques already used for the trees. I'm ambivalent about whether it's a release branch candidate though, as building perf isn't a major issue in most circumstances. It does gives me a significant frame-rate boost in very large urban areas (KLAX) from ~6fps to ~15fps with building density = 2.5.
