I think that's a good hypothesis. I had similar symptoms some time ago,
except my system would not start at all. It was completely cured by the
downloading of an updated driver.

It is possible that there is something in the sound files in the aircraft
that will not run which the driver cannot handle, while the others do not
uncover this problem. A quick test would be to disable the sound in the
~/Aircraft/~.set file in those aircraft which will not start.
