I downloaded this particular version yesterday, however the
runfgfs.bat files appear to be missing from the installed files.
The latest version doesn't use runfgfs.bat, install there is a nice
front end launcher that allows you to graphically select your airplane
and various run time options. There should be a "start menu" entry
and/or a desktop icon you can click on.
Also the system appears to be running very slow
You need a decent hardware accelerated 3d card to run FlightGear.
and I can't downlaod any further aircraft or scenery. Any time I try
to download these or the new soucre code, a windows message appears
saying that it can't open or run these files, as it doesn't know the
extension .tar.gz.
The FlightGear section of your start menu has a scenery installation
utility which can install your downloaded scenery sections in the
correct place.
For other .tgz files, you will need a tool to extract them. Winzip and
many other free and commercial windows archive tools can handle this format.
I think this may be occuring because I have not downloaded the Cygnus
shell yet!! Do I need to download the entire Cygnus programme in order
for this version to work correctly? Also I cannot find the three
fgfs-base-x.x.x.zip files on the flightgear site.
No, you don't need cygwin at all to run FlightGear ... just the single
fgsetup.exe is the only thing you need to get started.
Finally is it necessary to have PLIB and Simgear installed at this
stage, and should they be stored in the same place as Cygnus.
These are only needed if you are compiling FG yourself. If you are just
running the precompiled version you don't have to worry about any of
this. Cygwin is only one way to build the source code (and possibly
not a very good way.) FlightGear will also build with the Mingwin
tools and the MSVC compiler (v7 and newer.) But if you just want to run
FG, you don't have to worry about any of this.

Curt.
