What aircraft are you using?  The DME receiver works
in the c172p.  Try seting NAV1 on the c172p panel to
your DME frequency (say 109.55 for 28L at KSFO). You
then need to click the DME receiver to off position
before clicking it back to to N1.  You'll then see the
distance and time values appear.

The DME also works in the 737, but I have found that
you need to set the DME frequency on NAV2 to get a DME
reading.
