This sounds a lot like you have a "regular" x.org or XFree server, but a libGL.so from NVidia or ATI which is using a private extension. Have you done a distribution upgrade or any other work recently that would have caused this? (e.g. killing the install of a video driver half way through, etc...). You could try re-installing your video drivers to see if the problem fixes itself.
