Let me add that FlightGear is built on top of plib/ssg so FlightGear can load all the 3d model formats supported by ssg (ssg supports some formats better or more completely than others.)

However, for the base terrain. FlightGear expects a specific tiling scheme and specific coordinate system to work. It is unlikely that you can get pre-existing .flt terrain files to work well, unless you are only flying in a limited area.
