I'd be amazed if it didn't - but I and others suggested several freely available programs that will if it doesn't. The only thing I can think of, assuming you're trying to uncompress these files in the correct place is that your software is only un-gzipping the files and not untarring them. Tar.gz files are really a two stage item - they're both tarred (which basically groups all the files into one file) and then gzipped (which compresses them). Ensure that your software is both gunzipping and untarring them.
