That didn't quite work, but it lead me to looking over my joystick file 
again, comparing it to what the kernel found. They keep changing the name 
of the joystick.

Please add the following line to Input/Joysticks/Saitek/X45.xml:
<name>Saitek Saitek X45 Flight Control Stick </name>

I did that, took out all changes in preferences.xml and everything works 
very nicely as far as flight goes. I still have to learn the autopilot 
and see if there are some elevator trim issues to work out on the c172p.
