Thanks Jonathan,

As you will see from my reply to AJ, my own best theory is
heat too.

I am thinking of asking Santa (well actually Mrs Santa), for
a new card for Christmas but I have been concerned that
another nVidia, with the same driver, might be as bad.  It
is at least reassuring that no-one else here has seen the
same problem.
