Grep for "timer" and you should find a variety of methods for doing similar things. You can vary the resolution of the timer etc to suit. Once you begin to figure out what's going on, it's not too hard to implement... it helps to be comfortable working with OO code - since the only real programming I've done in the past was very procedural Fortran I'm still feeling my way around myself.
