Hi,

The default version in fgfsbase just has a piece of land around San
Francisco. I do not know if you just used Yast to get FlightGear or if you
rebuilt it yourself. Personnally, I prefer to rebuild verything ftom plib to
SimGear and FlightGear. So I can stay up to date and also I use from time to
time the CVS versions.

I would just like to remind that the server fgfs.hfrl.umn.edu is unavailable
and Curt is working on it.
Just a remark, I have at home 8 CDs concerning the landscape of the entire
planet Earth except Africa
and I feel that downloading all these w110n30-like files is a nightmare with
my modem. My provider has a bad habit of cutting me off every 25 minutes
during daytime and I do not know on Linux how I can force wdial to re-start
automatically and restart ftp where it died.In order to do not overload
Curt's server, please remember to use reget instead of get when the Internet
provider cut you off. I think that I am not alone to have these kinds of
problems. Personnally, I am in the process to rebuild all my scenery myself.
I already succeeded in rebuilding my own airport region scenery and now I am
downloading all the DEM 3' data from the USGS. I started last Saturday, and
I am at the letter M for the cities for which I got the DEM files.

What I would suggest is the following:
(i) In the TerraGear project give a mirror image of the DEM files which are
needed (bz2 could further reduce their size).

(ii) Sell one DVD where all the basic data, DEM files, GSHHS files, roads
and so on is centralised in one place. Advanced users could then recrank
their scenery themselves.

(iii) Sell two DVD's containing all the w110n30-like files of the planet
Earth. The problem is that at the present stage, this data is highly
perishable, since, we can now, to some extent, add railways, rivers and
roads to the Scenery. Also, some people made (SJC) some Scenery files
comming from Aerial photographs. It is the reason which I favour more the
option (ii).

Also, personnally, I am NOT a developper of FlightGear even if I know it
well enough the system that I can hack it. I would really appreciate if
there would be a TerraGear User mailing list related to users. Also, it
would be a good idea to simplify the fgfs-tools-server and fgfs-tools-client
routines. They are not designed exactly for the mainstream user. The
motivation of this tool is to parallelise the construction of Scenery on 10
different client machines. This is not the most common user's configuration.

Downloading my 8 CD's from Curt's site took me a while and as well I do have
an upward compatibility with my CD's I have no plan to do this again. The
server fgfs.hfrl.umn.edu was restricting severely the number of users that
could log in at the same time and very often when I got kicked off, I had to
way the next day before resuming my download. Is it possible to ask Red Hat,
Suse or others to sell DVD's concerning all the TerraGear stuff. Maybe I am
creazy, I think that when my download from the USGS will be over, I will be
independant when updating my scenery, and I will just have to download the
latest C++ code from TerraGear and crank it.

Also, you should compress the landscape using bzip2 -9. It makes files 20%
smaller. In some cases, it could save someone from re downloading the entire
file after being kicked off after 93% completion. Many people do not know
what is the command reget! This would ease on the FlightGear server.

I will probably some new messages concerning this topic when I will be more
advanced on my my cranking.
