For those interested and having access to a Windows or Macintosh machine:
Austin Meyer just made the demo for the upcoming version 6.0 of X-plane
available from:
http://www.x-plane.com/
Just a warning for those with slow connections: This is an 80 MB download
(making our base package looking "small"). This demo works for 10 minutes
and then goes into an automated mode. The full version will be available in
November.
Most will know but: X plane is a commercial Windows/Macintosh Flight
simulator sharing several concepts with FlightGear (OpenGL based, terrain
data,.. ). It's developed by essentially one guy: Austin Meyer.
X plane always had excellent terrain and has been famous for its flight
models, but was weak w.r.t scenery (mostly empty cities...). Now, Austin
managed to implement kind of an Autogen feature (automated generation of
buildings, trees..) like it was announced by MS earlier in an excellent
way, and the result is IMHO a serious competitor for MSFS (and others). It's
got excellent scenery now (up to trees, dynamic cars on streets...), full
ATC, excellent readable gauges (much, much better than those from MS and
IMHO better than ours, alone the artificial horizon is stunning), beautiful
clouds... I just did not yet manage to judge all stuff within the 10 min
given. Definitely worth a try, and the demo is free.
Regards, Michael
(and, no, unfortunately Austin will not pay me for the announcement :-()
