Well unless Dick leaned the mixture out it at sea level (KSFO) it should still 
be at the default rich setting.

He said that's he's flying near stall speed which means he's most certainly  
flying behind the power curve regardless of the throttle setting.
However a joystick calibration problem on the throttle axis certainly wouldn't 
help either.  :)
