scheme of things now. Will try various clients, there have been some very

I think, perhaps, that you are making a couple of simple, understandable
mistakes.
(1) You want to connect to irc.servername.summat. Only webservers use the
URL
format of www.domain.name.
(2) Get a nice easy off the shelf client like xchat or mirc.
Of course I could be wrong, but Firefox is primarily a web browser, and
although it can have a go at other tasks . . . etc . . .
