It's almost getting to that point in the US. I asked a simple question 
for simple information, and was told "no". Unfortunately, someone pretty 
much had to make a federal case out of it. The cop who was looking to 
talk to me didn't seem too hellbent on laying charges, and probably 
wanted more to ascertain that I wasn't planning anything destructive 
(I'm not sure how much more clear I could've gotten in my request for 
information, stating exactly what Flightgear was and what I wanted the 
data for). I assume they forwarded him the email, and he went based by 
my gmail signature (It stated where I used to work), eventually finding 
my folks. They were spooked because they thought I was in some sort of 
trouble, as he didn't tell them much. I'm not too worried at the moment, 
but I'm sure someone put a red flag by my name.

I sometimes think the US should change it's name to the Fascist States 
of Amerika (this is obviously dripping with sarcasm), because it seems 
like people are peering through keyholes on their own kin these days.
