(I hadn't looked at the code, and still haven't, though I wrote that part.) If fgfs encounters a METAR data set older than metar-max-age-min, then it will drop it and take the second nearest, and if that's too old, too, the third nearest etc. After a few failed attempts (10?) it will simply stop using real-time weather, so as not to put a too high load on the noaa.gov server.
