Assuming you have nvidia hardware on linux because you mention nvidia.ko
...
I would try installing the latest nvidia kernel drivers which you can
download from nvidia.com
It's probably not that simple or you would have already done it, but this is
the first thing I do when ever something goes goofy with my graphics.
