I might know that one. You need to turn off sound effects on the Linux desktop. Use the control panel to do that, or, more simply: $ fuser /dev/dsp $ Kill the proc identified. May need to be root if you do not own it. $ fgfs # should work now.
This procedure will have to be followed each time the desk top is opened until you figure out how to turn off sound effects in the control panel.
