I can't make head to tail of it except that the GL library used is Mesa. Now to 
install Nvidia drivers do I need to uninstall Mesa first?

Yes, that is most likely due to Mesa using software rendering.

Run the program gl-info in the FlightGear bin/ directory and see what it 

says.



To get 3d acceleration you need to install NVIDIA's driver for your 

card and probably(?) rebuild OSG, SG and FlightGear so that the build is 

done with the right OpenGL header and linked with the right OpenGL 

library.
